This podcast is recorded on a Mac using Audio Hijack Pro. As for equipment, John is using a Heil PR-40 microphone going through a Behringer Eurorack UB1222FX-PRO mixer, monitored with Etymotic ER-6i Isolator earphones, then straight in to his Mac. On Dave's end, a Heil PR-40 microphone is also used, and the whole show is mixed "live" through a Mackie Onyx 1220 FireWire-enabled mixer before being pumped back into the Mac (via FireWire, of course), and is monitored with Westone ES2 custom-fit earphones. Each microphone is run through a channel on a Behringer Autocom Pro-XL MDX1600 compressor, a touch of reverb is added with an ART FX-1 processor, and the whole thing is then compressed in software on the Mac. The show is recorded to AIFF, and then converted and uploaded with an Automator script. Michael Johnston from iPhone Alley then goes through and enhances the show to provide you with the AAC version. You can hear more details of the setup and how it's mixed on Episode #32.

Theme Music: "The Answer", written by Jeff Steblea and Brian Ayles, as performed by Go Figure. "Made On A Mac" bumper by Mark Fleser

Subject: Air Disk backups

One thing you did not cover that you should have - Apple has said that they do NOT support the backup to Airdisk function from the Airport Extreme. I attempted this from a MacBook to a disk (current backup disk for the MB) attached to an AEBS, and it failed, telling me that it would begin a backup when the MB was plugged back in. When I called Apple for assistance, they told me that it was not supported.

I posted about this in the Apple discussion boards and was backed up by another guy that indicated he was told the same thing.

So whatever they did, it is NOT supported by Apple, and they will not help you if you screw up your backups using this method.

Hey Guys. Great show this week.

As a note about having issues with the AEBS dropping the wireless signal during the initial backup, instead of opening a connection in the other direction (like what Pete did with his SlingBox), if you have a spare ethernet cable lying around you could just plug the computer right into the base station, not only ensuring that the connection won't be dropped but also giving you greater speed in making that initial backup.

Yet again, great show guy and I can't wait for the next one.

Subject: Network Mounts and Disconnect Issues.

You were talking about when you lose a network drive it doesn't disconnect gracefully.

Same issue on Linux and most other operating systems. NFS mounts just freak out when the plug is pulled. I've had the same issue with Linux for 10 years.

I'm not sure why it can't be fixed, but...

ExpanDrive. It's a way to mount remote filesystems via SSH. It works great, and doesn't give you problems when the connection goes away. Now if only I can use TimeMachine with it.

Subject: visual programming environments

Hi guys,

You talked about some ideas on getting started in Mac programming in response to a question from Provo, UT. Just thought I'd chime in and let you know of another visual tool, which a lot of people haven't heard of but is quickly growing in popularity, called Revolution (www.runrev.com). It is a fantastic xtalk took, and imo is even easier to get started with than RealBasic. Because it's xtalk and has its origins in HyperCard, the scripting language is very English-like and super easy to learn. While maybe not quite as powerful in some ways as RealBasic, it is still a great tool for beginners and experts alike. In fact, I am the lead developer for my company (www.readnaturally.com) and we currently do all development of our commercial products using Revolution.

Anyway, just thought I'd provide the info in case anyone is interested.

Thanks,

Chris Sheffield
