Apple has joined Intel, Samsung, National Semiconductor, Silicon Image and other companies that want a new interface for connecting computers to high-definition TVs and similar products. According to an article at The Wall Street Journal (subscription required), the group has created a specification for what it calls UDI (unified display interface), which would replace the non-digital VGA standard.

UDI would be compatible with HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) and would support that standardis content-protection technology, Silicon Image president Steve Tirado told the newspaper. He noted that the technology is supported by Hollywood movie studios that are concerned about high-definition movies being pirated.
