After starting to doubt ourselves, just a little bit, we found this column and realized, thankfully, that somebody else out there gets it after all. Many sites, including our favorite Macinstein, have argued that simply based on performance, Apple can be content with a 500MHz chip. The chip IS fast, maybe faster than anything else out there. However, try to explain that to Mr. Joe Firstcomputer, or for entertainment value only listen to your local CompUSA salesperson try. Call it what you want; mindshare, psychologically important megahertz race, whatever. Just realize that regardless of real world performance, a top-of-the-line 500MHz chip, today, is embarrassing. John Farr takes a good look, as only he can do, at the current state of the Mac Web. Since he has uttered something even remotely negative about Apple, I am sure that you will send me hate mail for linking it, and him the same for writing it, but there is a good lesson to be learned. And, if you pay close enough attention, you get the feeling that Mr. Farr thinks that us Mac people are OK after all. Our favorite quote from this piece:Youive heard me say this before, but itis time to say it again: in my day-to-day editorial duties I come across site after site that simply has no reason to exist other than to gratify the webmasteris ego. Mac sites burdened with arrogant, talentless dweebs fail once, twice, and try again, seemingly bereft of pride or self-awareness.
