Avid Buys Music Notation App Developer Sibelius

Avid announced on Wednesday that it has purchased Sibelius. Avid is well known for its Digidesign Pro Tools software and M-Audio keyboards and other audio devices. Sibelius produces professional and consumer-level music notation and educational applications. Avid purchased Sibelius for about US$23 million in cash.

Avid says that Sibelius will continue to develop and market its own software as a business unit of Digidesign - Avidis audio division. The company says that customers "can expect to see exclusive and targeted product offerings that combine a range of powerful tools, including Sibelius software, Digidesign Pro Tools Academic software, and M-Audio keyboards, microphones, and other audio peripherals."

Sibelius isnit the first company Avid has acquired. Digidesign has been an Avid company since 1995, M-Audio became part of Avid in August 2004, and in March 2005, it purchased the video editing company, Pinnacle Systems.
