Sony Launches New Double, Dual Layer DVD Burners

· by Brad Gibson · News

Sony has become one of the first DVD writer manufacturers to ship a dual-layer DVD+R that can write at 8x speeds, the company said Tuesday. It will not be available for use on Macintosh systems, but does give clear evidence that the technology is now available for future products from Apple as well as third-party drive manufacturers.

Sonyis DRU-810A is an internal drive that connects via an Ultra DMA Mode 2 ATAPI interface. It is Sony?s first burner to support DVD-R Dual Layer and DVD+R Double Layer recording as well as traditional 4.7GB Dual Format DVD burning.

In addition to 8x DVD+R DL, the drives supports DVD+R DL 4x. It also writes DVD+RW discs at 8x and DVD+R at 16x and DVD-RW at 6x.

The drive is also available in an external model -- the DRX-810UL -- with FireWire and USB 2.0 connectors.

The DRU-810A drive includes a silver and black bezel and ships with the Nero Software Suite and will retail for US$119.99.
