Apple Hires Former Newton Developer

· by · News

Former Newton MessagePad team member Michael Tchao is returning to Apple, but this time as Vice President of Product Marketing. Mr. Tchao last worked for Apple some 15 years ago on the MessagePad project, prompting speculation that his return is directly related to the company's alleged tablet computer efforts.

According to The New York Times, Mr. Tchao reported to work at Apple on September 28, although company spokespersons wouldn't elaborate on what his duties will include.

During his 15 year hiatus from Apple, Mr. Tchao has stayed busy. Most recently, he worked as Nike Techlab's General Manager, Nike's tech division that was responsible for developing iPod-compatible products including the Nike + iPod running shoe sensor system.

Regardless of whether or not Mr. Tchao will be involved in a tablet project, his job history indicates he ends up involved in interesting and exciting new products, so there's a good chance he'll find himself in a similar position now that he's back at Apple.

When I read the Times article today, I noticed that their mention of Tchao’s work on the “failed Newton personal digital assistant” brought some sharp rebukes from readers.
