iOS 26.5 Upcoming Features: What to Expect From Apple’s Next Update

iOS 26.5 is shaping up to be a refinement release rather than a headline-grabbing overhaul. Based on Apple’s past .5 updates, this version will likely focus on bug fixes, security patches, performance tuning, and a small number of targeted feature additions.

Here’s what’s realistically on the table.

Bug Fixes and Stability Improvements

Let’s start with the obvious. Mid-cycle updates almost always prioritize stability.

If you’ve seen reports of battery drain, overheating, Wi-Fi drops, or app crashes in earlier iOS 26 builds, iOS 26.5 will likely address some of them. Apple typically uses .5 releases to smooth out issues that surfaced after earlier updates.

These fixes rarely get flashy marketing, but they’re often the most meaningful part of the release.

Security Updates

Every incremental iOS release includes security patches. iOS 26.5 should be no exception.

Apple usually publishes detailed security notes alongside the update, outlining fixes for vulnerabilities affecting system components, WebKit, or kernel-level processes.

Even if no new features stand out, security updates alone make installing the latest version worthwhile.

Waiting on iOS 26.5? Here’s the expected release timeline.

Performance and Battery Optimizations

By the time Apple reaches a .5 update, it’s often fine-tuning system efficiency.

Expect small but noticeable improvements in areas like:

  • App launch speed
  • Background task management
  • Thermal control
  • Battery usage under moderate load

These changes aren’t always listed explicitly, but they tend to show up in day-to-day use.

Apple is reportedly overhauling iOS 27 to improve battery efficiency, read the full report.

Carrier and Regional Features

Historically, .5 updates sometimes introduce region-specific features.

That could include:

  • Expanded carrier support
  • Emergency feature rollouts in new countries
  • Satellite-related enhancements where supported
  • Regulatory compliance updates in certain regions

Apple has used mid-cycle releases in the past to activate features that were previously announced but not widely deployed.

Minor App Updates

Apple occasionally adds small improvements to built-in apps during .5 releases.

That could mean:

  • Refinements to Messages or Mail
  • Apple Music interface adjustments
  • Wallet or Apple Pay region expansions
  • Small tweaks to Settings

These changes are usually subtle but practical.

What’s Unlikely in iOS 26.5

Major new system features are unlikely at this stage. Apple typically reserves significant redesigns or platform shifts for the next major iOS version previewed at WWDC.

You shouldn’t expect a visual overhaul, large AI expansions, or entirely new system frameworks in a .5 update.

iOS 26.5 will probably serve as one of the final polish updates before Apple shifts full attention to the next major iOS cycle.

That doesn’t make it unimportant. In many cases, these late-cycle releases deliver the most stable and reliable version of the operating system.

Until then, here’s everything Apple changed in the iOS 26.4 beta.

If you’re running iOS 26 and waiting for a more refined build, iOS 26.5 is likely the update where things settle into place. Hopefully.

  • With regard to the next upgrade; 27.x, will the OS be able to see, initialize, and use an external SSD at or above 20TB?

I am currently at 26.5.1 and can use my Lacie_10TB external drive. I just purchased a 16TB SSD from Amazon and the disk manager sees it but I cannot initialize or use the drive.
Is there a software/app solution that will allow me to use the 16TB drive?

    Thanks in Advance; 😅

  • 5 months of Wi-Fi drops, greyed-out toggle, reboots & Bluetooth hell on iOS 26.5 iPhone 11

iPhone 11 Pro Max on iOS 26.5 (released May 11, 2026). This Wi-Fi/Bluetooth nightmare started after 26.2 in December 2025 and has now lasted 147 days / nearly 5 months through seven straight updates (26.2.1, 26.3, 26.3.1, 26.4, 26.4.1, 26.4.2, and now 26.5). Still broken.

Wi-Fi randomly drops (full bars, no internet). Toggle locks/greys out to OFF. I have to force restart + Reset Network Settings MULTIPLE times a day just to get online for a few hours. Random auto-reboots all day and night. Bluetooth constantly drops AirPods, car audio, and speakers; toggle often unresponsive.

I’ve done every reset, erase, and restore known to man. Phone is basically unusable for daily life.

Apple, this shared radio-stack bug on a still-supported iPhone 11 is ridiculous at this point. Fix it already.

  • My iPad will not let me use cellular data since the update. What can I do to get it to stick? I’ve rebooted, put it in airplane mode, rebooted again, it doesn’t stay. What is next?

  • 1. Image and Video Clarity Issues in all apps including Camera and Video apps. After the updates versions of 26.2 above.
    2. Excessive Overheating. The device becomes abnormally hot even during low usage such as browsing or messaging.

  • thanks for the tips… I am having serious issues with this ZIP thing. My accounting appp, Account Edge Pro, only saves as Zip file when closing out the old and starting the new year. I need to close out and send the old Jan-Dec 2025 year to my accountant, and can’t do it ARRGH!
Any suggestions you may have… definitely welcome.
Meantime I’m going to upgrade from Version 26.3.1, to the .5 version as you recommend. I ave had nothing but “arguments” with the current IOS version, both on my phone and laptop.
    Have a fabulous evening!
    Connie
