Apple Home Page Promises Tuesday iTunes Announcement

· by · News

Apple’s home page is currently sporting a message promising that, “Tomorrow is just another day. That you’ll never forget.” Along with four clocks suggesting that we’ll find out just what we’ll never forget at 10:00 PM EST (7:00 AM PST), the message also says that it will be an “exciting announcement from iTunes.”

What will this be? There’s probably a group of folks in Cupertino who know, but speculation has already begun that it will be an announcement for The Beatles catalogue, a subscription music service, and a long expected move to the cloud with your iTunes library. Or all three. Or maybe something else.

What’s curious, however, is that Apple hasn’t invited media to a media event, meaning that the announcement will take place through iTunes or Apple’s Web site. For a day that we’ll never forget, one could be forgiven for thinking there would be a Stevenote to go along with the announcement.

In the meanwhile, let the speculation begin.

“Tomorrow is just another day. That you’ll never forget.”

Andy Ihnatko made a great point: “iTunes Streaming” would seem to require an iTunes update, and we just got version 10.1 last week. (http://twitter.com/Ihnatko/status/4218596276310016)

Assuming tomorrow’s announcement is something that will take immediate effect and require no changes to iTunes software, we’ve eliminated a lot of possibilities. One that’s left is additional iTunes Store content (TV and movie deals?)

Bryan Chaffin

Yeah, seems reasonable to think it could be content related, especially with the lack of a media event.

That said, “That you’ll never forget” is a BALLSY bit of braggadocio for a mere content deal, even if it’s The Beatles (which is what I lean towards).

That said, no Sir Paul and Ringo on stage? No Yoko Ono/Steve Jobs turtleneck embrace for the world to see?

It’s hard to reconcile the lack of a media event with the promise contained in the message. smile

Here’s there announcement: iTunes no longer sucks.

Oh, wait. iTunes has no bugs. What am I thinking?

Yes, it would be. However, Apple likes their teasers to hint, subtly or otherwise, at the contents of the upcoming announcements. Suppose “You’ll never forget” is a clue rather than a boast? That phrase, coupled with the clock graphics, makes me think of memory and Time Machine ... retention of data ... possibly pointing to a cloud-based service? Maybe?

John Taylor

‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ is the title of a Beatles Song.  If they had used anything close to those words, then perhaps it would signal a Beatles deal.  Perhaps the bad blood that Apple fostered when it stole the Beatles’ company’s name is still there and there won’t be any deal made with Apple as long as Paul and Ringo are still alive.  Perhaps not.  Money talks.

wait a second, Tomorrows Midnight in Tokyo is tomorrow’s tomorrow, so we’ll have to wait another day, but then THAT Midnight will be tomorrow’s tomorrow’s tomorrow…

My bet is on iTunes for Windows Phone and an early morning (Los Angeles time) of futile Android bashing.

Maybe they have finally fixed the date/time syncing bug that affects those folks in New Zealand. Tomorrow arrives there first.

It’s Tuesday in several places in the world now - including Tokyo. And nothing’s happened yet.
Shrewd Apple didn’t say “Tuesday”, Bryan. They said “Tomorrow”

Looks like folks out east will have to wait until “Wednesday”

geoduck

I looked at the page again. 7:00am is an unusual time for an event. There is something critical about that particular time. Or possibly it has to happen worldwide all at once.

Right. It’s before Google can get their announcement about Gingerbread out the door in the morning.

Yep geoduck. A worldwide announcement, on Apple’s Homepages,  at 7:00am Cupertino time is my feeling too.

If you’re announcing a new streaming service, you probably don’t need an iTunes update if 10.1 already included everything behind the scenes. You also don’t need a media event with a huge new data center to handle what will effectively serve as a demo of your new capabilities.

IMO, Beatles is only “unforgettable” if they’ve dug up and re-animated John Lennon’s corpse (Living Dead-style). Granted, there would be a special Abbey Road edition of the iPod Touch and a White Album edition of the iPhone (the real reason they’ve waited to release the white iPhone; no technical problems there, those were just fabricated to keep competitors from looking into their own white phones). But that’s still not enough to be unforgettable.

Unforgettable means iTunes provides a new (for iTunes) way for people to interact with content at a basic level, whether it’s purchase, and/or consume, and/or store and access content.

About the possibility of streaming: It IS possible without an iTunes update. If you’ll recall, Apple appears to be able to add at least some features on the server side, no client side update needed. Remember that Ping appeared as an iPad option without the iPad or the iTune iPad app being updated. Streaming could appear the same way.

Other features could appear as well. Features that could be hidden in iTunes. For instance, When you iPad camera connection kit is attached to an iPad new functions appear, That API could just as easily be accessed by software, so as soon as your iOS device connects to iTunes new features become available. This API apparently does not require iOS 4.2, though it might for enhanced features.

So don’t count streaming out of the game yet.

Apple has in fact finally struck a deal with The Beatles and their rights owners and is preparing to announce that The Beatles’ music will soon be available in the iTunes Store.

For starters, the sources in the past that quashed any rumors of an impending Beatles launch are today very quiet, and strangely so. Next is the wording of the teaser on Apple’s website. The first line is, “Tomorrow is just another day.” As noted earlier, “Another Day” is a Paul McCartney song released on his solo record “Ram,” but written during the Beatles’ “Let it Be” sessions.

Also, for those into hunting for more clues, Apple’s teaser page features four clocks, each with the arms in different positions, (denoting the time of the announcement in California, New York, London and Tokyo time zones). Pretty unnecessary unless you compare it to the cover of the Beatles’ “Help!” album, featuring all four members side by side with their arms also in different positions.
