Apple Trademarks “280” for iOS Maps Icon

| News

Apple's Maps icon, now with 280 safety!Apple managed to score an interesting trademark in the U.S.: The number 280. More specifically, it’s “280” as used in the Maps app icon on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Trademarkia shows the trademark was filed on April 21, 2010, and changed to registered on June 28, 2011.

The trademark description states:

The mark consists of a gray map with streets in gray and white and highways in yellow and orange, a highway sign in blue, yellow and red bearing the number “280” in white, and a gray and red pin.

Presumably, Apple want to make sure other companies don’t release map and navigation products with similar logo or icon designs to make sure there isn’t any confusion with its own Maps app. Luckily for the rest of us, we can keep using the number 280, and driving the like-named highway in California that also just so happens to run right next to Apple’s Cupertino headquarters.

Interesting - I hadn’t really noticed it before, but the icon clearly (and more or less accurately) shows Infinite Loop at the intersection of 280 N/S and De Anza Boulevard.

So Apple can get a TM for 280 on a highway sign but some want to say App Store is too generic?

Amazing

As long as they don’t infringe on my trademark for the number “42”.

You can still use “What do you get if you multiply six by nine?” though. Couldn’t get that one locked up.

Thanks! I hadn’t noticed that until you pointed it out.

BurmaYank? A man of few words!

I see that his comment was edited. Anyway I am off to trademark the 420 icon. smile

Nothing needs to change, because:
- US 280 also goes right through Apple’s new “spaceship” tract (between N. Wolfe Rd. & N. Tantau Ave).
- IIRC, Apple plans to keep its HQ at One Infinite Loop
