Cupertino Approves New Apple-only Cafeteria

The Cupertino Planning Commission approved Apple’s plans to build a new 21,468 square foot cafeteria in the city just for its own employees earlier this week. Apple wants to build the facility so employees have a place to eat and talk business without worrying about eavesdropping.

“We like to provide a level of security so that people and employees can feel comfortable talking about their business, their research and whatever project they’re engineering without fear of competition sort of overhearing their conversations,” said Dan Whisenhunt, Apple’s director of real estate facilities. “That is a real issue today in Cupertino because we’ve got other companies here in our same business.”

The facility will include lounge areas, meeting rooms, and a courtyard along with the cafe services. The facility earned unanimous approval from the planning commission, according to The Mercury News.

The multi-level structure will be built at the intersection of Bandley Drive and Alves Drive, and will include a 70-space underground parking garage. To keep car traffic down, however, Apple plans to run 228 passenger trips an hour during the lunch peak to shuttle employees to the cafeteria.

This will mark the sixth employee-only cafe Apple has in Cupertino.
