Google Maps expanded on Tuesday to include bike route directions for the United States. According to Google, bike directions was the most requested feature by Google Maps users.
The biking directions include step-by-step instructions, highlighted bike trails and bike lanes, and bike-friendly roads. Routes are optimized to avoid hills, and stick to bicycle-friendly areas when possible.
Dark green lines indicate bike-only trails, light green lines highlight dedicated bike lanes along roadways, and dotted green lines show roads that don't offer bike lanes.
Google Maps already offers walking, driving and bus directions. Users can plot bike routes and directions on the Google Maps Web site via the More drop-down menu at the top of each map.
