Social gaming giant Zynga announced Thursday that it has acquired mobile gaming company Newtoy. Zynga is the developer behind Farmville and Mafia Wars (among others), while Newtoy is best known for recent gaming hits like Words With Friends (or Words With Friends HD). Terms of the deal were not announced, but this is the 7th acquisition for Zynga.
“The Games With Friends franchise is the best social game experience available on mobile today and we are excited to welcome the Newtoy team to the Zynga family,” Mark Pincus, founder and CEO of Zynga, said in a statement. “The Zynga With Friends Studio will continue to invent great mobile social game experiences for Zynga users everywhere.”
Under the deal, Newtoy will become a game studio under the name The Zynga With Friends. The studio will continue to leverage the Newtoy’s gaming model in developing new titles, but under the Zynga brand. Newtoy’s founder and CEO will be known as a VP for Zynga and GM of The Zynga With Friends.
