Apple’s famous “The Crazy Ones” commercial from 1997 featured the voice talent of Richard Dreyfus. Another version of that ad, however, was created with Apple co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs, although that version was never aired.
The iconic ad was part of Apple’s well received “Think Different” campaign and the Steve Jobs version shows his passion for the company he helped create.
The unaired version of the ad came to light following the death of Mr. Jobs on Wednesday. Mr. Jobs was 56 years old at the time of his passing and received tributes from the likes of current Apple CEO Tim Cook, Bill Gates, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, and President Barak Obama.

Thank you, Phil, for that wonderful idea.
This comment by thinkman (@Macworld.com/Oct 5, 2011, “Former Apple CEO Steve Jobs dies at 56” by Philip Michaels), so thoroughly & deeply expresses the feelings and thoughts of my own grieving:
“I’m not a man who prays ordinarily, but I prayed in my heart, everyday, that Steve Jobs would last forever! He has been my hero for decades; a true one-of-a-kind!
A world without Steve Jobs?... unthinkable. What a journey he took us all on. I think the “reality distortion field” he was so often pegged with was actually a “reality field”, that not everyone got. Maybe they will now!
He saw what could be, and got us there!
R.I.P., Steve”

Thanks Gareth. Did you do that video?
Sorry, hairy sir, I can’t take credit.
Well I am hirsute, gray, but groomed, as it may be
That made me downright misty.
I guess it’s been coming for the last 24 hours.
Me too. That’s one of my favorite ads of all time. It’s genius.
Can someone name who each person is in order for me? I know the obvious ones but given my young age there are several I don’t know.
I am pretty sure that it goes like this
Albert Einstein
Bob Dylan
Dr. Martin Luther King
Sir Richard Branson
John Lennon & Yoko Ono
Buckminster Fuller
Thomas Edison
Cassius Clay/Mohammed Ali
Ted Turner
Maria Callas
Mahatma Gandhi
Amelia Earhart
Alfred Hitchcock
Martha Graham
Jim Henson
Frank Lloyd Wright
Pablo Picasso
? I don’t know who is the young girl at the end
Someone handy with FC Pro X should add Steve’s image to this video. He’d be in good company.
Oh, and one more thing; I much prefer Steve’s voice to the one with Dreyfuss’ voice. It’s calm and soothing. He should have done more VOs on the Apple commercials.
Here is a link to some details about the commercial http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=436198 It includes a list of the people featured in the ad.
When you click on the link in “The original commercial can be seen here: http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/redlightrunner/thinkdifferent.mov,” it automatically downloads the Dreyfuss version to your Mac as a .mov. Now if I could just find a way to download the Steve-voice version…
iJack, it is a .mov file so we should be able to bring into QuickTime or iMove and append Steve’s photo to it. I have to run errands and won’t be able to try it until later.
Well, the .mov file is the Drefuss version.
I thought it would be cool to have and keep the SJ-voiced version, but with Steve’s image, perhaps replacing the little girl at the end. Something like the image currently on Apple’s front page. It would extend the original by a few seconds, but since the dialog is complete, a short length of silence wouldn’t hurt, given the circumstances.
iJack, I poked around a bit on the web and all I could find are Flash versions of the video. I understand that there are ways to download and convert those, but I haven’t gotten into it.
Oh well. It was just a thought. I download Flash movies once in a while, and I’m pretty sure that QT 7 Pro (I kept it for this very purpose) can convert/“save as” just about any format, to just about any other format. And even though it’s not being supported any longer, VisualHub may be even better. http://visualhubmac.gooofull.com/
