TextExpander 4 Adds Fill-in Snippets, More

Smile Software announced the immediate availability of TextExpander 4 for the Mac on Thursday. The new version of the auto-expanding utility for abbreviations and text shortcuts added the ability to create snippets with multiple fill-in-the-blank fields, multiple choice pop-up menus, and extra text blocks that can be added when a snippet expands.

Version 4 added support for default values and on-the-fly editing in popups, the ability to switch apps or expand snippets while using fill-ins, added contextual menus to the snippet editor and snippet list, and added hands-on tutorials for new users. The app also now includes French and German autocorrect groups, added a graphical display to usage statistics, improved the app’s appearance for Lion and Mountain Lion, and added Gatekeeper support for the upcoming release of OS X Mountain Lion.

TextExpander 4 is priced at US$34.95 and is available for download at the Smile Software website. It isn’t available through the Mac App Store because its features aren’t compatible with Apple’s sandbox requirements.

Updates from earlier versions of TextExpander cost $15, family packs for home use are priced at $44.95, and a five-user Office Pack costs $99.95.
