This has been a big week for Apple operating system upgrades: Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite arrived last Thursday and iOS 8.1 came out yesterday. But as eager as you may be to sample their improvements, don’t install either until you read what I have to say.
I’ve written about Macworld Expo often over the years and it’s been part of my life for as long as I’ve been a geek. I’ll miss attending more than I can put into words. Rather than try, let’s take a stroll down memory lane and relive some of the words I’ve written about Macworld Expo over the years.
People are always asking me where they should buy a Mac and my answer is almost always the same: The Apple Store. And when they ask, "Why?" as they always do, I tell them a joke. . .
The Parrot AR Drone is a high-tech, ultra lightweight, remote-controlled quadricopter (helicopter with four rotors). Now an RC quadricopter is pretty cool, but one that streams HD video from its camera to your iPad, iPhone, or Android device in real time, could be very, very cool. I’ve dreamed about owning for one for years, but only found the courage last month to plunk down $299 for the latest and greatest model, the Parrot AR Drone 2.0 Elite Edition.
I’m now on my tenth day of carrying both new iPhones — one in each front pocket of jeans or shorts — wherever I go. As I reported last week, I’m about to replace my year-old iPhone 5s with an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus. Now, after ten days of careful consideration, I believe I’ve got it all figured out. I won’t keep you in suspense: I’m getting...
Last Friday I got an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 6 Plus for review; by mid-afternoon I had both fully charged, synced, and ready to rock. Sure I felt dorky with an iPhone in each hand all weekend, but it was worth it, gentle reader, to bring you this early hands-on report. But even more importantly, it was worth it to help me solve a first-world problem: Which iPhone 6 should I buy?
The BookBook iPhone case from Twelve South is all-leather and handmade, with a clever, whimsical design that kills two birds with one stone by combining a case for your iPhone 4 or 4S and a wallet in a single package that successfully mimics the look and feel of a vintage leather-bound book.
Guitar Hero and Rock Band may make it look like you can play the guitar, but they don’t teach the skills you need to really play. Rock Prodigy: Guitar for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad gets you closer to the real thing, and thanks to his musical talent Bob LeVitus was able to put the app through its paces and let you know if it’s worth your time and money.
This isn’t going to be a very long review — iKlip, from IK Multimedia, is a “universal microphone stand adapter for iPads.” Yes, it’s a one-trick pony but it does its one trick quite nicely.
I recently wrote a Dr. Mac column for the Houston Chronicle that was about clever product designs. Among the products I singled out for cleverness beyond the call of duty were new iPhone and iPad cases from ZeroChroma. To quote myself, “I’ve tested hundreds of cases, folks, and I thought I’d seen it all until I came across these clever case/stand combos.”
