Interestingly, Marc Hamill is within a year or two of Alec Guiness’s age when the first Star Wars was filmed.  So: who is going to be Hamill’s young protege?

I heard it will be a new character, a birdlike creature he raises to become the first feathered Jedi.
The title of the film will be Coo Hand Luke.

Geoduck, you’re lucky I finished my orange juice before reading your title, or I’d be sending you a bill for spit-take damage to my monitor.

I’m surprised; I wouldn’t have bet that they’d set Episode VII in the “near future” of the original trilogy as they just announced.  There are decades of books written since the movies, many covering this time period of the story universe, and now either the new movie will have to wriggle its way into the straitjacket of that “canon,” or they will have to declare a “reboot” and upset all the fans who can recite the name and family connections of every member of the New Jedi Order.

I wish them luck; fitting a new tale into a “canon” is hard, if you’re not just filling out the backstory of some second-tier character.  A lot of the problems I had with the prequel trilogy were in large part due to the fact that they had to make it finish by setting up the situation at the start of the original movie, Episode IV.  I think of Episode III as “Revenge of the Loose Plot Threads.”
