Google has released a new accessory for Pixel phones that mirrors Apple’s move into straps, but with a different approach. Instead of a crossbody design like Apple’s $59 iPhone 17 strap, Google introduced the Rope Wristlet for $7. It’s meant to hang from your wrist, not your shoulder, and it works with a wide range of phone cases.
A strap for the wrist, not the shoulder
The Rope Wristlet attaches to a phone case through a carabiner ring and D-shaped insert that slips between the case and the back of the phone. Unlike Apple’s Crossbody Strap, which requires an Apple-made case or bumper, Google’s accessory is designed for broader compatibility. You can pair it with nearly any case that has a USB-C cutout. The exception is Pixel Fold devices, which Google explicitly ruled out because of how their cases are built.
Apple’s accessory focuses on style and convenience, using built-in magnets to adjust strap length quickly. But it comes at a steep price. At $59, you’ll also need to add the cost of a compatible Apple case if you don’t already own one.
Google keeps it simple and cheap
Google’s strategy with the Rope Wristlet is different. The strap is available in three color combinations: Purple/Blue, Green/Yellow, and Black/Grey. None of them are tied to Pixel 10’s color palette, but at $7 each, buying multiple straps is still cheaper than Apple’s single accessory. That price difference highlights Google’s focus on affordability and accessibility rather than premium styling.
According to the product listing on the Google Store, the strap works across a wide set of devices, making it more versatile than Apple’s option. Its simple design also avoids locking you into a specific ecosystem.
New trend?
Phone straps are quietly becoming a trend again, and both Apple and Google are signaling that the market is worth watching. Apple’s Crossbody Strap leans into fashion and exclusivity, while Google’s Rope Wristlet leans into practicality and price. Whether you see straps as a style accessory or just a way to keep your phone secure, the competition is already shaping up.
