Apple plans to introduce a new high-end laptop called the MacBook Ultra, a device that would sit above the current MacBook Pro lineup and bring several major upgrades, including a touchscreen and OLED display. The new machine signals Apple’s push deeper into premium laptops while expanding its Mac lineup across more price points.
The rumored MacBook Ultra will reportedly feature Apple’s first OLED display on a MacBook, along with touch support and a thinner design. Apple has not offered touchscreen Macs before, so this change would mark a significant shift in the company’s laptop strategy. The device is expected to arrive toward the end of the year and target users who want Apple’s most powerful and premium notebook.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is preparing this device as a new tier rather than a replacement for the MacBook Pro.
“While Apple could keep the traditional MacBook Pro name, a ‘MacBook Ultra’ label would more clearly signal their position at the top of the lineup.”
Gurman explained that Apple plans to position the MacBook Ultra above the current M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro models. This approach allows Apple to maintain the existing MacBook Pro lineup while introducing an even more premium option for professional users and enthusiasts.
OLED Display Could Raise the Price
The OLED display will likely play a major role in pushing the price higher. Apple raised prices when it first introduced OLED panels on earlier devices such as the iPhone X and the iPad Pro. Those changes increased starting prices by roughly 20 percent.
Because the MacBook Ultra will bring OLED technology to the Mac lineup for the first time, Apple will likely follow a similar pricing strategy. The company wants to move its high-end laptops further upmarket while still keeping other MacBook models available for mainstream buyers.
Apple Expands Its “Ultra” Strategy
The MacBook Ultra also fits into Apple’s broader plan to introduce more premium “Ultra” devices across its product lineup. The company already uses the Ultra branding for products such as the Apple Watch Ultra and its high-performance silicon chips.
Reports suggest Apple is also exploring high-end devices such as a foldable iPhone with a price around $2,000 and advanced AirPods equipped with computer-vision cameras for visual intelligence features. These devices would sit above the current lineup in the same way the MacBook Ultra would sit above the MacBook Pro.
If Apple moves forward with this naming strategy, the MacBook Ultra will represent the company’s most advanced laptop and push the Mac lineup into a new premium category.
