Apple’s original racing drama “F1: The Movie” secured a major win at the 98th Academy Awards, taking home the Oscar for Best Sound. The award highlights the film’s detailed audio design, which captures the roar of Formula 1 engines, trackside tension, and the intense atmosphere of professional racing. With this win, Apple adds another major Academy Award recognition to its growing film catalog.
The film follows Sonny Hayes, played by Brad Pitt, a former Formula 1 prodigy whose career nearly collapsed after a serious crash in the 1990s. Decades later, Hayes returns to the sport after a former teammate asks for help saving a struggling team. He pairs with a talented rookie driver while trying to prove that his racing instincts and experience still belong on the world’s fastest circuits.
According to Apple, the film arrived at the Oscars with four nominations, including Best Picture, and had already built strong momentum during the awards season.
“Apple’s history-making film ‘F1’ won Best Sound at the 98th Annual Academy Awards.”
Strong awards season for F1
The Oscar win continues a successful awards run for the film across the industry. Before the Academy Awards, the movie collected major honors including Best Editing and Best Sound at the Critics Choice Awards, along with Best Sound at the BAFTA Film Awards. Several other guilds and industry groups also recognized the production for technical achievements.
At the same time, the project gained attention for its commercial performance. Apple said the film became the highest-grossing sports feature film ever released, which pushed the movie beyond traditional racing audiences and into mainstream popularity.
Another milestone for Apple TV
This victory also continues Apple’s strong record at the Academy Awards. The company previously made history when “CODA” won Best Picture in 2022, marking the first time a streaming service earned the award. Later, Apple’s animated short “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse” also secured an Oscar.
“F1: The Movie” now streams globally on Apple TV, adding another high-profile title to the platform’s expanding original film lineup.
