Apple has warned iPhone users running older versions of iOS to update their devices to stay protected from active hacking threats. The company specifically asked users on iOS 13 and iOS 14 to upgrade to iOS 15 as soon as possible.
Apple highlighted recent reports about hacking tools that target outdated iOS versions. Attackers are using exploit kits called Coruna and DarkSword to take advantage of system vulnerabilities. These tools can target devices running iOS 13 through iOS 17.2.1 if they are not fully updated.
Apple stated, “If your iPhone doesn’t have the latest software, update iOS to protect your data.”
The company has already fixed these security issues through recent updates. Devices running newer versions from iOS 15 onwards remain protected against these threats.
Updates and protection measures
Apple released new updates for iOS 15 and iOS 16 on March 11 to address the issue. Users with older versions will also receive alerts prompting them to install critical security updates. All devices currently on iOS 13 or iOS 14 support upgrading to iOS 15.
Apple also uses Safari’s Safe Browsing feature to block known malicious websites. This feature stays enabled by default and helps prevent users from accessing harmful links.
For users who cannot update, Apple suggests enabling Lockdown Mode. This feature is available on iOS 16 and later and limits exposure to potential attacks by blocking risky content and connections.
Apple said the hacking tools have appeared in countries such as Ukraine, China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Malaysia. These tools can affect any device running outdated software.
