Apple iPad A18 Release Date Update Revealed, Launch Likely Soon

Apple’s cheapest iPad missed Apple’s recent product announcement week, even as the company refreshed iPad Air and introduced MacBook Neo, and now attention has shifted to when the entry-level model will finally get its update. The device remains one of Apple’s most popular products, so even a small refresh matters, especially as users expect better performance and newer features in 2026.

Reports now suggest that the wait will not be long, with the new base iPad still scheduled for an early launch window tied closely to Apple’s current software rollout timeline. That timing places the update firmly within reach over the next few weeks, aligning with Apple’s usual strategy of pairing hardware improvements with software readiness.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in the Power On newsletter, says, “Since last year, Apple had been on track to launch a refreshed version of the entry-level iPad in the first half of 2026.” He adds that the release is expected within the iOS 26.4 window, which runs until May, giving Apple flexibility on the exact launch date.

A18 chip brings AI support

The biggest change comes from the move to the A18 chip, which replaces the current A16 processor and delivers faster performance along with support for Apple Intelligence. This upgrade finally brings AI features to Apple’s most affordable iPad, although major Siri improvements are expected later with iOS 26.5.

Apple may also add its in-house C1 modem and N1 networking chip, but those details remain uncertain. Overall, this update focuses on performance rather than design changes.

That said, pricing remains a concern. The base iPad starts at $349, but pairing it with the Magic Keyboard Folio pushes the total to $598, which is almost equal to the MacBook Neo. That gap highlights a mismatch that Apple needs to address, especially for users considering the iPad as a primary device.
