NASA will launch its Artemis II mission around the Moon on April 1, and Apple Vision Pro users will get a new way to experience it. The agency plans to capture the launch in immersive video, which will be available on Apple’s mixed reality headset in the future.
The Artemis II mission will lift off at 6:24 p.m. Eastern from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This test flight will last around 10 days and will send astronauts around the Moon before returning to Earth. The mission marks a major step in NASA’s plan to return humans to deep space.
Cosmic Perspective confirmed that it is filming the launch using a Blackmagic URSA immersive camera. The team is already on site and has set up its equipment to capture the event in high detail.
Cosmic Perspective shared that it is recording Apple Immersive Video specifically designed for the Vision Pro. This format combines 3D video with 180 degree views and spatial audio to create a more realistic experience.
Cosmic Perspective states it focuses on “sharing the awe and wonder of space through films and immersive experiences.”
The company has already filmed several rocket launches using similar technology. Its work aims to give viewers a sense of being present at major space events.
The upcoming Artemis II footage will add to the growing library of immersive content for Apple Vision Pro. Users will be able to watch the Moon mission launch as if they are standing near the launch site.
Cosmic Perspective is also working on a dedicated Vision Pro app called Rocket Launch VR, which will feature more space-related immersive content.
This project shows how space exploration and new display technology are coming together to offer more engaging ways to experience historic missions. According to its website, the group is set to release a “Rocket Launch VR” app designed for the Apple Vision Pro in the near future.
