iPhone Ultra (Fold) Dummy Unit vs Z Fold 7: Apple’s Wider Design is Already Dividing Fans

Apple’s rumored foldable iPhone, currently being called the “iPhone Ultra” in leaks, just appeared again through a new dummy unit comparison against the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. The side-by-side look quickly sparked debate online because Apple seems to be taking a very different direction from Samsung’s taller foldable design.

Instead of copying the narrow book-style layout used by Samsung for years, Apple’s foldable appears much shorter and wider. Some users immediately liked the compact tablet-style approach, while others questioned whether the outer screen would feel awkward for daily use.

Recent dummy units shared online show the iPhone Ultra looking closer to a passport-sized mini tablet when folded. That changes how typing, multitasking, and one-handed use could feel compared to Samsung’s slimmer Fold lineup.

Apple’s Fold Looks Wider Than Expected

The biggest talking point is clearly the aspect ratio. Samsung’s current Fold devices use a tall and narrow cover display. It works well for one-handed scrolling, but many users still complain that typing feels cramped. Apple appears to be solving that problem differently by making the device noticeably wider.

According to recent reports, the iPhone Fold could feature roughly a 5.3-inch outer display and a 7.6 to 7.8-inch inner display with a more square-like layout.

That wider design may improve:

  • Split-screen multitasking
  • Video playback
  • Typing comfort
  • Tablet-style app layouts
  • Gaming in landscape mode

At the same time, the design also creates new compromises.

Several reactions online focused on how much space the keyboard could occupy on the inner display. Others said the phone looks too wide for comfortable one-handed use when folded.

Z Fold 7 Still Looks More Practical

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 still looks slimmer and easier to handle in everyday situations. Samsung has spent years refining its hinge design, thickness, and weight. The Z Fold 7 reportedly measures just 8.9mm folded and weighs around 215g, making it one of Samsung’s thinnest foldables yet.

The iPhone Ultra dummy, meanwhile, appears thicker and heavier. Some early hands-on impressions even compared it to carrying a small passport in your pocket.

However, Apple may be prioritizing the unfolded experience instead of the folded one. That could make sense if the company wants the device to behave more like a compact iPad when opened.

Apple entering the foldable market could finally push the category beyond ultra-tall smartphone designs. Interestingly, Samsung itself is now rumored to be working on a wider “Galaxy Wide Fold” design that looks much closer to Apple’s approach. That alone says a lot about where foldables may be heading next.

Right now, the reactions are mixed. Some people already prefer Samsung’s cleaner and narrower Fold 7 design, while others believe Apple’s wider layout could make foldables more practical for real productivity.

Either way, the dummy unit comparison shows one thing clearly: Apple is unlikely to play safe with its first foldable iPhone.
