OpenAI Confirms GPT-5.6 Release Date After Government Review Delay

OpenAI is set to release GPT-5.6 this week after holding back public access while the U.S. government reviewed the upgraded AI model family. The company has now confirmed that GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna will become available on Thursday, July 9.

OpenAI first unveiled GPT-5.6 at the end of June and introduced a new naming system with this release. Instead of using only model numbers, the company now uses Sol, Terra, and Luna to separate its models by capability, speed, and cost.

GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna explained

Sol is OpenAI’s flagship GPT-5.6 model and targets users who need the strongest performance for complex tasks. Terra works as the balanced option for everyday use, while Luna focuses on faster and more affordable access.

OpenAI said this naming system gives customers and developers clearer choices as each tier improves over time. The number shows the model generation, while the name shows the capability tier.

OpenAI previously limited GPT-5.6 access to a small group of trusted partners at the U.S. government’s request. That approach marked a change from the company’s usual release pattern.

OpenAI has now said it is expanding preview access globally, although it remains unclear whether Thursday’s launch will reach all users worldwide or start with selected regions. Sam Altman also said last month that OpenAI was working toward a global release.
