Richmond’s problems become more serious when the women’s team loses another striker after learning she is pregnant. With few options available, Ted takes Alice Chilton’s suggestion of open tryouts seriously and turns it into Richmond’s next recruitment plan.

The trials bring plenty of unsuccessful candidates, including Dani Rojas’ sister Maria, but three players quickly become important to Richmond’s future. Lizzie Davis impresses the coaches with her ability and leadership, while Shannon, a familiar face from earlier seasons, gets another chance to prove herself. Ted decides to sign Shannon even after Alice and Beard question whether she is ready for senior football.

Richmond still needs a striker, which brings Gemma Jay into the story. Gemma previously played alongside Alice but walked away from football and began studying law after their difficult relationship pushed her away from the game. Alice still believes Gemma has the talent Richmond needs, although convincing her to return proves difficult.

Ted eventually helps Gemma understand that Alice recommending her says more than Alice’s harsh coaching style ever did. Gemma joins Richmond while continuing her law studies, giving the team the attacking option it desperately needs.

Richmond finally gets a result

Episode 3 ends with Richmond playing its first preseason friendly. Gemma comes off the bench with the match still scoreless and delivers almost immediately, scoring the late winner that gives the Lady Greyhounds their first victory.

The result also sets up one of the season’s more interesting relationships. Ted celebrates Gemma’s contribution, while Alice immediately points out where she needs to improve, showing that the tension between the former teammates remains unresolved.

Season 3 ended with Ted leaving Richmond and returning to Kansas, while Season 4 has brought him back to England for a very different challenge. The first two episodes focused on Ted’s return, Alice’s frustration over being passed over for the head coaching job, and the lack of resources surrounding Richmond’s women’s side. Episode 3 moves the story forward by finally giving the new team a clearer identity.

There is also a running Susan Boyle theme throughout “Richmond’s Got Talent,” including references to her famous talent-show breakthrough before the episode closes with “I Dreamed a Dream.” It fits an episode built around unexpected players getting another opportunity to show what they can do.

With Lizzie, Shannon and Gemma now part of Richmond’s plans, the Lady Greyhounds finally have the beginnings of a team that can move beyond preseason. What do you think will happen when Richmond’s league campaign begins? Let us know in the comments.
