Apple Releases A Barrage Of AirPort Updates, Including Beta Software For Windows

A irPort users take note! Apple has released a few updates in regards to the companyis wireless networking products. New software includes AirPort 3.1 for OS X, Firmware 5.1 for AirPort Extreme base stations, something called a Mib, and AirPort Extreme Admin Utility 3.1 for Windows.

AirPort 3.1 for OS X adds such features as compliancy with the final IEEE 802.11g specification, Interference Robustness, automatic channel selection, and more.

New AirPort Extreme Base Station features:

  • Compliant with the final IEEE 802.11g specification
  • Base station Interference Robustness, which provides improved performance when 2.4GHz devices like cordless phones and wireless video distribution system cause significant interference with the AirPort network.
  • Automatic channel selection allows the base station to find the most appropriate channel to use whenever it is restarted.
  • Simpler Wireless Distribution System (WDS) setup experience in AirPort Admin Utility
  • Administrators have the ability to set the DHCP range on their base station when NAT is on
  • Performance improvements between wired and wireless clients.

New AirPort Extreme client features:

  • Compliant with the final IEEE 802.11g specification
  • Client side Interference Robustness

AirPort 3.1 for OS X requires OS X version 10.2.6 or higher, and an AirPort or an AirPort Extreme card.


AirPort Extreme Base Station Firmware v5.1 is a companion to the above mentioned AirPort software, and thus lists many of the same features.

New AirPort Extreme Base Station features:

  • Compliant with the final IEEE 802.11g specification
  • Base station Interference Robustness, which provides improved performance when 2.4GHz devices like cordless phones and wireless video distribution system cause significant interference with the AirPort network.

AirPort Extreme Base Station Firmware v5.1 requires an AirPort Extreme base station, and either AirPort Admin Utility 3.0.4 (OS X 10.2) or 2.0.8 (OS X 10.1.5)


AirPort Extreme Mib is... well, something. Apple doesnit say much about what this is, but if you need it, itis been updated. Hereis Appleis terse description:

This file is a custom SNMP mib for the AirPort Extreme Base Station v5.1.

Last but not least, you can now administer your AirPort (Snow dual-ethernet version only, not the original Graphite model) or AirPort Extreme base station from Windows 2000 or XP with AirPort Admin Utility for Windows.

AirPort Extreme Admin Utility for Windows is unsupported beta software. It requires Windows 2000 or XP and either an 802.11b or an 802.11g card.
