NovoThink has introduced an iPhone all-in-one charger and case with two unique features: It is solar powered and it automatically kicks in when needed.
This case is attractive, not heavy, but a bit wider at bottom than some charger cases. It won’t fit so easily in a pocket, but then it is not supposed to. The idea is to keep it in a place where the sun’s rays can reach it. There is a cutout area at the top that is sufficient for attaching a wrist strap or other kinds of fasteners and, as it is part of the case itself, it is very sturdy. The whole case, which is composed of a hard plastic is sturdy. The inside of the case is lined with a soft material that feels like suede and protects the back and sides of the phone nicely.
The lithium-ion polymer battery more than doubles the battery life and if sunlight is not available for charging it can be charged using the more traditional USB connection (a USB chord is included).
The case has two speaker ports to prevent sound dampening and LED status light indicators to indicate the status of the battery charge. There is also a free Solar Planner App that helps the user to estimate solar needs based on individual usage and plans, and a USB connection that allows you to charge or sync with iTunes without taking your phone out of the case.
This case is currently available in black or white. At some unspecified time in the future it will also be available in 4 metallic colors - green, blue, silver, and bronze.

Using It
Following the manufacturers directions I charged the case for 3 hours, using the USB connection cable to insure that the case obtained a full charge.
It is very easy to put a phone into the case and to remove it from the case. You just slide it in until it makes contact with the connector or slide it out. When in use, the Surge automatically charges your iPhone 3G or 3GS using its internal rechargeable battery whenever your iPhone is not fully charged. The LED status lights easily keep you aware of your battery charge status.
There is one other thing that set this case apart, it comes with a complete user manual, no bigger than the iPhone, that answers all your questions.
Bottom Line
This charger case is ideal for anyone who spends a lot of time outside and can take advantage of the solar recharge aspects of the case. If you don’t, then there is no reason to spend the extra money to get a solar powered case other than supporting solar energy. It is attractive, sturdy, and easy to use. I particularly enjoy the fact that it automatically kicks in when needed. It would make a great graduation or Father’s Day gift for the outdoor lover.
