Xiaomi 17 Pro challenges iPhone 17 with Leica 50MP trio and rear “Magic” display

Xiaomi is skipping straight to the 17 series (17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max) to go head-to-head with Apple’s new iPhones in China, pulling its launch forward and touting “the most significant upgrade” to its numbered line. Company leaders are also claiming first dibs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for the range.

A fresh leak points to a Leica-branded triple camera on the 17 Pro: a 50 MP main sensor at f/1.67, a 115 mm / f/3.0 telephoto with 5× optical zoom, and an ultrawide around 17 mm. The bigger headline, though, is a full-width “Magic Back Screen” built into the camera island—meant for animations, glanceable info, and rear-camera selfie previews.

If that rear display sounds familiar, Xiaomi flirted with the idea on 2021’s Mi 11 Ultra, which packed a much smaller 1.1-inch AMOLED beside the cameras. Reviving (and enlarging) the concept could give the 17 Pro a visible differentiator as Apple leans on camera bar tweaks of its own this cycle.

Bottom line: by jumping to “17,” promising the latest Snapdragon, and pairing Leica 50 MP optics with a bold back-screen design, Xiaomi is positioning the 17 Pro as a direct foil to iPhone 17 in the tightest battleground of all—mainland China’s premium segment. (South China Morning Post)
