Tesla reportedly testing CarPlay finally after years of refusing it

Tesla is preparing one of its biggest software shifts in years. The company is testing Apple’s CarPlay inside its vehicles, and the feature could roll out by the end of this year. This is a major change for a company that built its entire in-car system on its own and refused to rely on any outside platform.

Bloomberg reports that Tesla has already started internal testing. The outlet also says people familiar with the project described ongoing discussions about a release timeline. They said the plan is not final, and Tesla often delays or cancels features even after months of work.

A Change In Direction

Tesla ignored user requests for CarPlay for almost a decade. It relied on its in-house infotainment software and resisted letting Apple into the experience. The approach started to shift after Apple canceled its own car project in 2024. At the same time, Elon Musk began depending more on Apple for distribution of the X app and the Grok AI service.

The report says Tesla is testing the standard version of CarPlay. It will not use CarPlay Ultra. CarPlay will appear in a window inside Tesla’s interface instead of taking over the whole screen. The two systems will run side by side. Tesla will support wireless CarPlay so you can connect your iPhone without a cable.

How CarPlay Will Work Inside Tesla

Tesla will not allow CarPlay to interact with features such as Full Self-Driving. You will still need Tesla’s navigation app for those functions. CarPlay will remain limited to its usual apps, such as Music, Messages, Maps, and Siri, as well as third-party options like Google Maps and Spotify.

Bloomberg’s report also notes that a 2024 McKinsey study found that about one-third of buyers consider CarPlay or Android Auto a deal-breaker when choosing a car. Tesla’s lack of CarPlay has become one of the most common complaints among potential buyers. Adding it now gives Tesla a way to address slowing sales and rising competition.

Tesla currently offers Apple Music and Apple Podcasts as native apps, but it has been one of the biggest holdouts for CarPlay. If this rollout happens, it will be a major win for Apple’s ecosystem and a clear shift in Tesla’s long-standing approach.
