Apple removed John Giannandrea from its executive leadership page soon after announcing that he would retire next spring. The move follows Apple’s statement earlier this week that Giannandrea will leave his role as AI chief and serve as an advisor until his departure. The quick update signals how Apple wants to show a clear transition inside its AI division.
The retirement announcement arrived on Monday, and Apple updated the page soon after. According to the original release, former Microsoft Corporate VP of AI Amar Subramanya will take over as Apple’s vice president of AI.
Amar Subramanya will report to Craig Federighi, but Apple has not yet added his profile to the leadership site. Apple is also shifting some of Giannandrea’s teams to Sabih Khan and Eddy Cue, including AI Infrastructure and Search and Knowledge.
A Long Tenure Ends During a Major AI Reset
Giannandrea joined Apple in 2018 as senior vice president of machine learning and AI strategy. He oversaw Siri, Core ML, and many of Apple’s key AI projects.
Before joining Apple, he worked at Google as a senior vice president of engineering. His exit now arrives as Apple prepares a major shift in its AI roadmap and tries to recover from a difficult year for Siri.
