Apple released a new firmware update for AirPods Pro 3 today. If you use AirPods Pro 3, you can expect your earbuds to move to build 8B34, up from 8B30, which arrived shortly before the holidays.
Apple does not deliver AirPods firmware the way it ships iOS updates. You cannot tap a button to start it. Instead, your AirPods install the update automatically in the background when you meet Apple’s conditions.
What’s new in 8B34
Apple’s release notes stay brief this time. The company lists:
- Bug fixes and other improvements
That is it. Apple did not publish a detailed changelog for 8B34.
How to update AirPods Pro 3 to 8B34
Apple says you can trigger the update process by setting things up correctly, then leaving your AirPods alone for a while. Here’s the checklist Apple provides:
- Update your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to the latest software, and keep Bluetooth on
- Connect your AirPods to that device
- Connect the device to Wi-Fi
- Put your AirPods in the charging case
- Plug the case into power, then close the lid
- Wait at least 30 minutes
- Open the lid to reconnect, then check the firmware version again
If your AirPods refuse to update, Apple recommends you reset them and try again.
How to check your firmware version
You can confirm the update from your paired Apple device:
- iPhone or iPad: Settings → Bluetooth → tap the info button next to your AirPods → look under About for firmware
- Mac: System Settings → Bluetooth → tap the info button next to your AirPods
If you do not have an Apple device nearby, Apple says you can book an appointment at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorised Service Provider to update the firmware.
