Apple plans to give the iPhone 17e a Dynamic Island while keeping its display at 60Hz. The phone targets buyers who want a modern design at a lower price. This change updates the look but avoids the higher-cost screen used on the rest of the iPhone 17 lineup.
Display and Design
The iPhone 17e will keep a 6.1-inch OLED panel with a 60Hz refresh rate. Apple appears to hold back ProMotion to control costs. Even so, the move from a notch to Dynamic Island brings the interactive cutout used for live activities and system alerts.
In a post on Weibo, the leaker known as Digital Chat Station said the phone will keep the 60Hz screen but add Dynamic Island. The design shift suggests Apple bases the 17e on the iPhone 15 frame rather than the older iPhone 14-style body used by the 16e.
“The iPhone 17e came on stage in the first half of the year. It was said before that the core upgrade was the screen, 6.1-inch 60Hz LTPS OLED. Although it has a 60Hz refresh rate, it has a smart island design, upgraded A19 processor, Face ID face recognition, and the cheapest iPhone Buff. Sales are expected to be far ahead of the generation.”
Performance and Hardware
Apple will update the chip. The iPhone 17e should move from A18 to A19, built on TSMC’s N3P process. That brings a modest CPU gain over A18. Another leaker claims Apple may downclock the A19 for this model, putting real-world performance close to the A17 Pro outside of Neural Engine tasks.
Other hardware changes focus on value:
- Magnetic ring for MagSafe support, missing on the iPhone 16e
- Older C1 or C1X modem to keep costs down
- No N1 wireless chip
- Face ID remains standard
Cameras and Pricing
Apple plans to keep the familiar camera setup:
- Front camera: 12MP
- Rear camera: 48MP
The launch window points to early in the year, likely February, with a possible spring release if schedules shift. The starting price should remain $599.
Apple modernizes the iPhone 17e’s look with Dynamic Island while protecting its budget position by sticking to a 60Hz display. You get the new design language, updated silicon, and MagSafe, without paying for ProMotion. For many buyers, that balance will define the appeal of the iPhone 17e.
