Apple recently released iOS 26.2.1 for iPhone users. It arrived unexpectedly soon after iOS 26.2. Apple says this update includes support for the second-generation AirTag and general bug fixes. Many around the web note that the focus of this version is stability rather than major new features.
This update also aims to fix some lingering problems from iOS 26 and 26.2. Apple issued these builds as part of a broader software refresh across devices to iron out performance and emergency call issues, especially on older models.
Most official notes and early tester reports show the release working as intended on supported devices. Yet user discussions and forum threads reveal a mix of experiences once the update is installed.
iOS 26.2.1 fixes
iOS 26.2.1 was meant to address several small bugs that users complained about after the larger iOS 26 rollout. Key points include:
- Support for AirTag 2 hardware with improved Precision Finding.
- Small system interface corrections, like fixing overlapping icons in control panels.
- Under-the-hood tweaks targeting system stability.
This combination of fixes aims to smooth out rough edges and improve everyday use for the average iPhone owner.
User reports on issues
Despite Apple’s intentions, some users report trouble after installing iOS 26.2.1. Threads on Reddit and Apple forums list several problems that people are still encountering.
Exact problems users say they hit:
- Safari tabs were wiped after updating
Users say iOS 26.2.1 closed or erased all tabs, including Private tabs, right after the install. This report is concentrated in the Reddit thread titled “After updating to iOS 26.2.1, I lost all my safari tabs.” - Apple Maps saved places and favourites are disappearing
People report favourites and saved places vanishing, sometimes tied to iCloud syncing, sometimes not. This shows up clearly in “iOS 26.2.1 update has more issues than 26.2” on r/ios, where the original post lists “favourites, places deleted” as a top issue. - Face ID is feeling slower or failing more often, plus Face ID toggles are breaking inside apps
Some users describe a noticeable delay when Face ID fails, and the passcode screen appears, while others say Face ID becomes “painfully slow and unreliable” even on devices that behaved fine pre iOS 26. These reports are discussed in “iOS 26.2.1 released” on r/apple and “Is Face ID painfully slow and unreliable for anyone else on…” on r/ios.
Separately, people also report Face ID sign-in getting disabled inside third-party apps after the update in “iOS 26.2.1 update has more issues than 26.2” on r/ios. - Control Centre and HomeKit controls are not responding normally
A specific complaint says Home controls in Control Centre stop working in the compact view and only respond after opening the full-screen panel. That exact behavior is described in “iOS 26.2.1 update has more issues than 26.2” on r/ios. - Battery drain, sometimes described as severe
Battery complaints show up every update cycle, but iOS 26.2.1 has its own concentrated reports so far. On one forum, users mentioned that version 26.2.1 ruined the battery life on their 17 Pro Max, and they also compared the battery drain between versions 26.2 and 26.2.1. - Storage or “system data” swelling, plus devices feeling unusable in worst cases
Apple Support Community threads include users describing major storage pressure and instability after updating, including claims that the phone became “unusable.” The Apple Support Communities thread title is “iOS 26.2.1 has rendered my phone unusable”, and replies discuss “Reserved Auto-Update Space” consuming large space in some cases.
A minority of users say their device became unstable or very slow after the update.
Experiences vary by device
Not all users face these problems. Some report that their iPhone runs smoothly and feels more stable than before. On higher-end models, performance seems solid according to several forum posts.
Others note that earlier versions of iOS 26 brought battery and performance quirks that still flicker up after upgrades. These issues are less common but show how minor updates sometimes miss deeper system bugs.
Can you downgrade?
Apple stopped signing iOS 26.2 after the new version rolled out. This blocks most users from downgrading if they find 26.2.1 problematic.
Conclusion
In general, iOS 26.2.1 improves support for new hardware and fixes small bugs. For many users, it installs without major trouble. Others report issues tied to maps, Face ID, UI quirks, and performance instability. Experiences vary by device model and app usage.
If reliability matters and you depend on features like Maps or Face ID, check forums for reports on your specific iPhone model before upgrading. You may also wait for the next point release, iOS 26.3, which is expected to arrive soon with more targeted improvements.

My iPhone won’t notify me of an incoming call whilst my phone is in use. I have tried the suggested fixes but no joy. The basic functions of my iPhone seem to be failing despite two ‘bug fixes’. I was contemplating buying a new iPhone but is it really worth it. At what point do we as users ditch the IOS, our confidence in the software designers has all but expired. Microsoft is also experiencing issues, any suggestions for a better provider?
I purchased a new Iph 16 less than a yr ago. This 26.1. made my battery drain even with all save features on. My interface with everything, open face, apps, everything is like using an old MS 95 that has not been upgraded and has every old picture ever taken on the hard drive. I only use my phone for calls. I don’t use email, (Proton online) or ANY apps. What a disappointment. It was perfect before which salved my pain at having to shell out OAS for this to enter the 21st century with. And the dang ph is heavy in my pocket. Total drag. Thank you to my Linux Tower for being the sane stable part of my life during the broligarchy.
You tube app stuck on loading/ wont play videos since the update no fix works other than using youtube.com
it wiped all my apps i only have settings and call log only
Last time I upgraded my apple software it completely wiped out all my gmail.
Why should I trust the next one?
After upgrading to the latest software on my IPad, my contacts can’t hear me, I hear them and have video, no problem. My contacts hear a garbled sound at 1.5 to 2.0 speed. I took my iPad to geek squad and after investigating came to the conclusion it’s the Apple software upgrade. I’m very frustrated!!!
My hearing aids & hearing aid app are not working well in my phone. I no longer can hear any audio through my hearing aids on apps or videos, music, etc. I’ve tried deleting apps & reinstall. Very disappointed.
Since my phone updated I can’t hear calls unless it’s on speakerphone. I have done all the troubleshooting I could find and no luck. It was fine before the update. Anybody else having this problem?
I’m far from tech savvy, but I rely heavily on my phone for communication and connection with family and friends. Since this latest update, I have had serious connection issues. Although the internet icon is on at the top of my screen and my phone shows I’m connected to WiFi, I am constantly getting notifications that I am Not connected to the internet. When I try to reply to messages, both IM and text, when I attempt to to open various web pages (but not all) and especially Apple Maps and Street View. These are painfully slow to open or don’t open at all or open in bits and pieces. In addition, my battery drains very quickly.
Cindy Crom, same experience as you. Didn’t know if wifi was working or worse, phone was using mobile data. After about a month I ditched Apple phones and am now glad I’m back with Android. As soon as I switched everything worked the way I expected. Another unrelated side effect of iphones is that as a Linux user Apple does not allow you to connect with phone on a PC and download anything. Sucks that Apple has such a hate for free source operating systems. Greed rules!
The problems I’ve had are ghost icons on the screen. After a few seconds they do go away but it is distracting. Also performance is really slow also the battery run down much faster than before. I had multiple screens open at the same time, I think I got that stopped. I’ve had to restart my IPad because it freezes every once in a while.
Ithe latest upgrade deleted my contacts addresses. I don’t have the option to use the ‘favorites’ feature. It’s been deleted.
The earlier phone models were updated in some areas, but the older phones did not get the appropriate update.
I think Apple is trying to phase out the old models . I now have to buy a newer model so I can use a phone
Not good

Ugh! Face ID and touchscreen swipes are randomly unresponsive on my iPad Pro and forget the Magic Keyboard. It’s almost useless. I was able to get the trackpad working again, but swiping from screen to screen or up or down is gone completely.
After the download, second device verification no longer works. The college sends the text with the verification code (a six digit number), but it the iPhone doesn’t display it. The same is true for my local credit union.
This is too much of a coincidence to be a coincidence.
I’ve had problems with updating apps the App Store is trying to log in with an email address I’ve never had when I corrected it then it says my password is incorrect I had to reset my password a dozen times to no affect on the phone to Apple for an hour only to be told to drive to my nearest Apple Store a 45 min drive away in Glasgow had to wait an hour to be seen only to be told to delete app and reinstall with the correct username and password
I just installed 26.2.1 on my iPhone 13 Mini — and the touch screen has become entirely unresponsive. I cannot shut down. I cannot access any apps or screens. I’ll need to let my battery drain until the phone shuts down, then try to restart with a power source plugged in. Argghh!
iOS 26 is the single worst Apple Software in forty years, even after 8 months of updates. Tim Cook should focus on Apple, not Trump.
Agree
Ever since the “UPGRADE” to 26.2.1 I notice a lot of connection issues with Uber driver app. I was able to go the whole day on a charge. Not anymore I make it through half a day and it keeps telling me that its adapting the system to help the battery draining.
Did they break the ability to reply to a specific text? I can’t do that anymore. This update is absolutely terrible. It looks aweful and now I’m finding more and more features are just gone.
Seems as though Apple has had some notable software people leave for greener pastures I guess. I remember years ago that updates were mostly exorcised of bugs when they reached the general public release. Don’t know if the OS has just become way more complex? But it does appear that all operating systems have trouble getting a handle on bugs lately. It isn’t only Microsoft struggling with breaking stuff all in the name of fixing other stuff.
