First Look at CarPlay Video Playback in iOS 26.4 Beta

iOS 26.4 beta reveals upcoming CarPlay video playback support with AirPlay, Apple TV app integration, and parked vehicle safety restrictions.

Apple is moving closer to bringing video playback to CarPlay, and the first developer beta of iOS 26.4 shows clear signs that the feature is almost ready. The update includes new references to video streaming through AirPlay while the vehicle is parked, which aligns with Apple’s earlier promise to expand CarPlay functionality in iOS 26.

Back at WWDC 2025, Apple confirmed that it would allow users to watch videos on the car’s display through CarPlay as long as the vehicle is not in motion. Now, iOS 26.4 beta appears to be the first version where that support shows up in code, even though users cannot access it yet through the public interface.

Developer Thomas Dye managed to activate parts of the hidden interface using Xcode’s CarPlay simulator on a Mac, and he demonstrated the feature in a recent YouTube video. His test shows that videos from any AirPlay-supported app can play on the car’s display once the iPhone connects to CarPlay.

How CarPlay Video Playback Works

In the simulation, the system allows users to move video between the iPhone and the car display using a control inside the Dynamic Island. This gives drivers a simple way to shift playback back to the phone when needed.

The demo also reveals an Apple TV app built specifically for CarPlay. It includes access to Apple TV+ shows, purchased content, and a dedicated MLS Season Pass section. However, Apple has not confirmed whether the final version will include the full feature set seen in the simulator.

Apple’s website makes it clear that automakers must enable support because the system only allows playback while the vehicle is parked. That requirement means rollout will depend not just on Apple releasing iOS 26.4, but also on car manufacturers updating their systems.

Once iOS 26.4 reaches the public, attention will shift to automakers to complete the final step and officially bring CarPlay video playback to drivers.
