OpenAI is closing in on a major milestone as ChatGPT approaches 1 billion weekly active users, highlighting how quickly AI tools have moved into the mainstream and how deeply people now rely on conversational AI for everyday tasks.
The company says ChatGPT currently has 900 million weekly active users, a 350 percent increase from 18 months ago, when usage was far lower, and the product was still expanding across platforms.

According to OpenAI, more than 5 percent of those weekly active users pay for a consumer subscription, and the company now counts over 50 million consumer subscribers. It adds that January and February are on track to become the largest months for new subscriber additions in its history, as more people turn to ChatGPT to learn, write, plan, and build projects. OpenAI says performance improvements, including faster responses, stronger safety systems, and greater reliability, have helped drive this momentum.
Growing role across platforms
ChatGPT has also expanded its reach through platform partnerships, including direct integration with Siri in iOS versions, which gives users built-in access to AI features on Apple devices.
At the same time, Apple is preparing broader changes to Siri and Apple Intelligence, with plans to lean further into AI chatbot capabilities in iOS 27. The company initially partnered with OpenAI for system-level AI features and later reached an agreement with Google to use Gemini for a more personal version of Siri in iOS 26.5.
Apple has also opened up Xcode to agentic coding with tools from Anthropic and OpenAI, which signals how AI is becoming central to software development as well.
