Apple TV’s hit drama The Morning Show continues to expand its cast as production moves forward on the upcoming fifth season. Emmy winner Jeff Daniels has joined the series in a major recurring role, adding another well-known name to a show that already features some of television’s biggest stars.
Daniels will play Lukas, a self-made billionaire and founder of a well-known investment firm. His character enters the story at a time when the newsroom continues to face major changes after the events of season four, which followed the aftermath of the UBA-NBN merger and the growing pressure around truth and responsibility in a polarized media landscape.
According to Deadline, Daniels’ role marks another collaboration with Apple TV, following his appearance in the third season of Shrinking and his narration work on the documentary 9/11: Inside the President’s War Room.
Daniels returns to newsroom territory
Daniels’ casting also brings him back to familiar ground. He earned strong praise and an Emmy Award for playing anchor Will McAvoy in Aaron Sorkin’s drama The Newsroom, a role that made him closely associated with television stories centered on journalism and media.
The fifth season already features a large returning cast that includes Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Nestor Carbonell, Karen Pittman, Nicole Beharie, and Jon Hamm.
Showrunner Charlotte Stoudt recently hinted that fans may not wait too long for the new season.
“I think so. I haven’t spoken to Apple about any release dates, but between season three and four there was a writers strike, so that was quite a long delay. So without that this year, maybe we’ll move a little more quickly.”
Apple TV has not confirmed an official release date for The Morning Show season 5 yet.
