Apple takes a different approach with the MacBook Neo camera indicator. Instead of a physical light, the device shows a green icon on the screen when the camera turns on. At first, this raises concerns. People assume software indicators are easier to hide or hack. However, Apple designed this system to stay secure even under advanced attacks.
John Gruber reported this in his Daring Fireball blog. He cited developer Guilherme Rambo, who explained how the system works at a deeper level.

Rambo said, “the software-based camera indicator light… runs in the secure exclave part” of the processor.
What is the secure exclave
The secure exclave is separate from the main system. It runs on its own real-time operating system and communicates through a limited interface. This isolation blocks unauthorized access. Even if someone gains high-level system control, they still cannot bypass this layer.
Rambo added, “even a kernel-level exploit would not be able to turn on the camera without the light appearing on screen.”
This means the camera and the indicator remain linked. If one activates, the other shows up. There is no way to separate them through software tricks.
Many people trust hardware indicators more. A physical light connects directly to the camera, so it feels safer. But Apple built this software indicator in a controlled environment that behaves like hardware in practice.
The system draws the indicator directly onto the display at a privileged level. No regular app or even system-level code can hide it. This setup also protects the microphone indicator, which adds another layer of visibility.
Apple confirmed this design in its Platform Security Guide. The company stated that no untrusted software, even with full system access, can use the camera without showing the indicator.
In simple terms, the MacBook Neo replaces hardware with a tightly controlled software system that delivers the same level of trust.
