iOS 26.4 brings meaningful updates to CarPlay, adding two new features that expand how you interact with your car while also setting up a bigger change that is expected to arrive soon.

AI voice assistants
With iOS 26.4, CarPlay supports a new category called voice-based conversational apps, which opens the door for AI assistants like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude to run directly in your car. This change allows you to talk to these assistants while driving, instead of relying only on Siri.
Apple keeps strict rules in place to reduce distractions. These apps must launch straight into voice mode, and they cannot display text or visuals on the screen. You also cannot set them as your default assistant, so Siri still handles core system tasks. Even with those limits, this update gives drivers more flexibility, especially if they already use third-party AI tools on their iPhone.
Ambient Music widget
Apple also expands CarPlay widgets with a new Ambient Music option in iOS 26.4, which lets you quickly start playlists based on your mood without opening a music app. You can choose from categories like Chill, Productivity, Sleep, and Wellbeing, and control them directly from your dashboard.
To enable it, go to Settings, then General, then CarPlay, and open the Widgets section on your iPhone. From there, you can add Ambient Music to your widget stack. This feature builds on the widget system Apple introduced in iOS 26, and it shows how CarPlay is slowly becoming more customizable and easier to use at a glance.
Video support is coming soon
Apple also appears close to adding video playback support to CarPlay, a feature it first previewed during WWDC last year. Early iOS 26.4 beta versions included signs of this feature, and developers have already tested parts of the interface.
Apple has not included video playback in the final iOS 26.4 release, which suggests it still needs more work before a wider rollout. When it arrives, car manufacturers will need to approve the feature for their vehicles, so availability will vary depending on the model.
For now, iOS 26.4 focuses on voice interaction and quick controls, while laying the groundwork for a more capable CarPlay experience in the near future.
