Apple has received FDA clearance for its Medical Imaging Calibrator feature on the Studio Display XDR, and the company says it will begin rolling out to users in the United States later this week, bringing a new use case for radiologists who rely on accurate diagnostic imaging in their daily workflows.
Apple first introduced this feature alongside the Studio Display XDR announcement, where it explained how the calibrator works with macOS to deliver DICOM medical imaging presets, allowing trained professionals to view diagnostic images directly on the display without needing separate specialized hardware, which simplifies setups for many medical environments.

The Medical Imaging Calibrator helps radiologists switch between general use and diagnostic viewing through System Settings on macOS, which makes the Studio Display XDR flexible enough for both professional and everyday tasks, while still meeting standards required for general radiology, excluding mammography.
Apple confirmed that the feature cleared the FDA under 510(k) number K253582, with the decision marked as substantially equivalent, and the approval falls under radiology classification, which signals that the feature meets regulatory requirements for clinical use in supported scenarios.
The company adds that healthcare professionals already use Mac systems widely, and this feature builds on that foundation by integrating medical imaging tools directly into Apple’s display ecosystem, improving workflow efficiency without adding extra hardware.
