Netflix Playground App Challenges Apple Arcade With Ad-Free Kids Games

Netflix has launched a new app called Netflix Playground, designed for children aged eight and under. The app focuses on safe, simple gaming with popular characters from shows like Sesame Street and Peppa Pig. It offers a dedicated space for kids to play without ads or in-app purchases.

Netflix Playground works as a standalone app that users can access with their existing Netflix account. It is available on both iPhone and iPad. The company has offered games since 2021, but this is the first time it has created a separate platform focused only on younger users.

The app includes a collection of games built around familiar characters. These games aim to provide a controlled and engaging environment where children can play without distractions or hidden costs. Parents also benefit from a simpler setup that avoids concerns about ads or unexpected payments.

Netflix now enters direct competition with Apple Arcade, Apple’s subscription gaming service. Apple Arcade also provides games without ads or in-app purchases, but it works as a separate subscription. Netflix, on the other hand, includes Playground within its existing plans.

Apple offers a bundle called Apple One, which combines services like Apple TV, iCloud+, Apple Music, and Apple Arcade. This bundle costs around $19.95 per month. In comparison, Netflix offers a lower-priced plan at $8.99 per month that includes streaming and games for both adults and children. Its ad-free plan is priced similarly to Apple One at $19.99 per month.

Netflix launched Playground at a time when several countries are introducing stricter rules for children’s apps and online content. This shift has increased demand for safe and simple digital experiences for kids.

The app is now available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, the Philippines, and New Zealand. Netflix plans to expand access worldwide on April 28.
