Apple TV is putting James Marsden back in business, and this time he is not walking into another rich neighborhood scandal. The streamer has ordered “Disavowed,” a new action thriller series starring Marsden as a fired CIA case officer who refuses to walk away from a deadly global hunt.
The series gives Apple TV another spy-adjacent thriller with a personal hook at the center. Marsden will play Brad Griffin, a legendary CIA case officer who gets abruptly pushed out while chasing an elusive assassin accused of killing his colleague. Instead of disappearing quietly, Griffin goes after the assassin himself, partly because there is a $15 million federal bounty attached to the target.

It also keeps Marsden close to Apple TV after his role as Owen Ashe in “Your Friends & Neighbors” Season 2. That makes “Disavowed” feel less like a random casting win and more like Apple building around an actor who can handle charm, danger and controlled chaos in the same scene.

Plot
“Disavowed” follows Brad Griffin at the worst possible moment in his career. He is in the middle of a global hunt for an assassin when the agency cuts him loose. In most spy thrillers, that would end the mission. Here, it makes the mission more dangerous because Griffin no longer has the protection, resources or rules of the intelligence world behind him.
The $15 million bounty gives the story a sharp edge. Griffin is not only chasing justice for a dead colleague. He is also stepping into a hunt where money, revenge and survival are likely to collide. That setup gives Apple TV room for a grounded espionage story with bigger action beats, especially with Art Marcum and Matt Holloway involved after their work on “Iron Man” and “Uncharted.”
There are no spoilers yet because Apple has not released episode details, a trailer or a premiere window.
