Apple Maps in iOS 26.5 Adds Suggested Places and Prepares for Upcoming Ads

Apple added two noticeable changes to Apple Maps in iOS 26.5, and both focus on how users discover places inside the app. One update improves recommendations during searches, while the other prepares the app for Apple’s upcoming ads rollout that starts later this summer.

The biggest everyday change is a new “Suggested Places” section that now appears when users tap the Maps search bar. Apple Maps automatically shows two recommended locations based on what is trending nearby and the user’s recent search activity.

The feature refreshes frequently, so recommendations change often depending on where the user is searching or traveling. For example, someone searching restaurants in New York City before a trip will start seeing location suggestions tied to New York instead of their home area. The feature makes Maps feel more dynamic because users no longer need to start every search from scratch.

Suggested Places brings faster local discovery

Apple Maps in iOS 26.5 adds Suggested Places recommendations and prepares users in the US and Canada for upcoming ads.

Apple designed the new feature to surface useful locations quickly without requiring extra typing, and that becomes especially useful when users are looking for nearby food spots, coffee shops, attractions, or stores while traveling.

Here’s what influences the recommendations:

  • Trending places nearby
  • Recent search history
  • Current search location
  • Recently viewed areas in Maps

The recommendations appear directly inside the search interface, which keeps the experience simple and easy to access.

Apple Maps ads support arrives before launch

iOS 26.5 also introduces support for Apple Maps ads in the US and Canada, although the ads themselves have not officially launched yet.

After updating, some users will see a new pop-up message inside Maps explaining how local ads will work. According to the notice, Maps will show ads based on approximate location, current searches, and areas viewed inside the app, while Apple says the advertising data is not linked to Apple Accounts.

The early notification has confused some users because the actual ads rollout still has not started. However, iOS 26.5 clearly lays the groundwork for Apple’s summer launch plans.

Apple Maps remains one of Apple’s biggest long term services projects, and these new additions show the company is pushing harder to improve discovery and local search inside the app.
