Apple is reportedly preparing a second-generation iPhone Air for launch in spring 2027, and the company appears focused on improving two areas that matter most to buyers: camera performance and battery life.
The upcoming model is expected to keep the same slim design as the current version. Still, it could gain a second rear camera, making it a more attractive option for users who want a lightweight iPhone without stepping up to a Pro model.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has already moved a new iPhone Air prototype into advanced testing, with the device featuring both a Wide and Ultra Wide camera system. That change would address one of the biggest complaints about the current iPhone Air, which relies on a single rear camera.
“Current prototypes of the new model, code-named V62, add a second rear camera for ultrawide-angle photography. It’s now in advanced testing within Apple.”
The report also says Apple is working to improve battery life on the next iPhone Air. While it remains unclear whether the company will use a larger battery, efficiency improvements from the upcoming A20 chip built on a 2nm process could help deliver longer usage times without changing the device’s thin profile.
The new iPhone Air is expected to launch alongside the standard iPhone 18 in spring 2027. Apple will reportedly release the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and its first foldable iPhone several months earlier as part of a new staggered release strategy.
Apple introduced the Air lineup to offer a stylish and highly portable alternative within the iPhone family. While the model has performed better than previous mini and Plus variants, Apple sees clear room for improvement, and adding an Ultra Wide camera could make the next version a much stronger value for buyers.
