Apple still plans to launch the second-generation iPhone Air later this year, according to new claims tied to production feedback. The update sounds modest, with no major design or feature shifts, and lines up more with a routine refresh than a full rethink.
Latest leak
A Weibo leaker known as Fixed Focus Digital says the iPhone Air 2 remains on track for a fall launch. In a post translated from Chinese, the leaker pushed back on delay rumors and wrote that “the feedback from the production line is that the iPhone Air2 will be launched this fall.” They added that changes are “very minor” and described the device as “basically a routine upgrade,” rejecting talk of heavy spec cuts.
The timing suggests Apple could announce the device alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models and a rumored foldable iPhone, keeping the Air in the main fall cycle for now.
Reason behind the delay rumors
A separate November report from The Information claimed Apple had delayed the next iPhone Air until 2027 due to weak sales. That report said Apple would use the extra time to rethink the device, possibly adding a second rear camera, reducing weight, improving cooling with a vapor chamber, and increasing battery size.
Soon after those reports, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg offered a different take. He said the iPhone Air was never locked to a yearly schedule. According to Gurman, the name “iPhone Air,” rather than “iPhone 17 Air,” showed Apple did not want to treat it as an annual release.
Gurman added that a refreshed Air could still arrive in spring 2027, possibly alongside the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e, under Apple’s split launch approach. He also said the main focus of the next Air would be a move to a 2-nanometer chip to improve battery life, not a major physical redesign.
For now, the latest production rumor suggests Apple has not pulled the plug on a 2026 appearance. Whether that means a fall launch or a quieter update remains the open question.
