Apple is reportedly bringing back an older security feature for its upcoming foldable device. Recent software files discovered inside the new iOS 27 testing beta suggest the highly anticipated iPhone Ultra will skip facial recognition completely. Instead, the premium smartphone appears to rely on a fingerprint scanner, likely because the folding frame is too thin to fit the standard camera sensors required for modern face unlocking.

Software files point to a fingerprint scanner on the device

A developer known as “pdfu” recently found interesting text strings hidden inside the fourth beta release of the operating system. The code specifically mentions support for digital car keys on a mobile device equipped with both Ultra Wideband technology and a fingerprint sensor.

Right now, every iPhone model with an Ultra Wideband chip uses facial recognition for security. Since the upcoming foldable handset needs this specific chip for location tracking but lacks the physical space for a complex camera system, the code heavily implies a return to older biometric technology.

The fingerprint sensor will likely sit on the power button

The hardware maker previously solved a similar design problem with its midrange tablet line. By moving the fingerprint reader to the top power button, the manufacturer managed to shrink the screen borders without paying for expensive facial scanning hardware. The upcoming foldable phone will likely use the same clever button design.

While the new foldable device will be the most expensive phone the brand has ever sold, buyers will have to settle for older security technology. Still, placing the sensor on the side button means you can easily unlock the screen whether the handset is open or closed. We will know for sure when the company reveals the final hardware on September 9.
