Apple has officially enabled beta firmware updates for AirPods Max 2 users running iOS 27 beta 2 or macOS 27 Golden Gate beta 2. The feature arrives after Apple previously confirmed that support for AirPods Max 2 beta firmware would be added in the second developer beta release.
With the latest software updates, AirPods Max 2 owners can now enroll their headphones in Apple’s beta firmware program directly from their connected iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Once enabled, users can receive upcoming AirPods firmware updates before their public release.
How to Enable AirPods Max 2 Beta Firmware Updates
If you want to test upcoming AirPods features and improvements, follow these steps:
On iPhone or iPad Running iOS 27 Beta
- Connect your AirPods Max 2 to your iPhone or iPad.
- Open Settings and tap Bluetooth.
- Tap the (i) button next to your AirPods.
- Scroll down to AirPods Beta Updates.
- Turn on the toggle to enroll in the beta program.
On Mac Running macOS 27 Beta
- Connect your AirPods Max 2 to your Mac.
- Open System Settings and select Bluetooth.
- Click the (i) button next to your AirPods.
- Scroll down to find AirPods Beta Updates.
- Enable the toggle to start receiving beta firmware updates.
According to Apple, firmware updates will install automatically when the AirPods are charging and located near the paired iPhone, iPad, or Mac that has beta updates enabled.
AirPods Max 2 is not the only model eligible for beta firmware. Apple also offers firmware betas for AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2 with the USB-C charging case, and AirPods Pro 2 with the Lightning charging case.
Users who install beta firmware gain early access to new features, fixes, and improvements before Apple releases them to all customers. Since beta software remains under development, users should expect occasional bugs and performance issues during testing.
