Volkswagen is reportedly preparing to support Apple Wallet car keys on iPhone and Apple Watch in future vehicles.

New server-side Apple code suggests VW could join the list of automakers that allow users to store a digital car key in the Wallet app. However, the code does not reveal which Volkswagen models will support the feature or when it will launch.

What Apple Wallet Car Keys Do

Apple Wallet car keys let users lock, unlock, and start a compatible car using an iPhone or Apple Watch. Apple says the feature works only with eligible vehicles and supported devices.

Some cars also support passive entry, which can unlock the vehicle when the user approaches with their device. Features depend on the car model and automaker support.

If VW adds this feature, it will follow brands such as BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Audi.
