Sybylla wants to build an independent and exciting life, although her family expects her to follow a more traditional path. Her plans become more complicated after she meets Harry Beecham, a wealthy neighbour who develops strong feelings for her.
Christopher Chung plays Harry, while Anna Chancellor appears as Sybylla’s grandmother, Mrs Bossier. The cast also includes Genevieve O’Reilly as Aunt Helen, Kate Mulvany as Gussie Beecham and Jake Dunn as Frank Hawden. Alexander England, Sherry-Lee Watson and Miah Madden also have supporting roles.
First Look Shows Sybylla’s Fight for Freedom
The first footage introduces Sybylla as outspoken, determined and unwilling to let marriage decide her future. She wants to write stories and experience a larger world, even when the people around her question her choices.
The images also highlight the series’ Australian countryside, grand family homes and detailed period costumes. Production took place across South Australia, including locations near Penola and Adelaide Studios. Around 400 local cast and crew members reportedly worked on the project.
Liz Doran developed and co-wrote the adaptation, with Alyssa McClelland and Anne Renton directing the episodes. The series presents Franklin’s coming-of-age story for a new audience while keeping its focus on ambition, romance and personal freedom.
The novel previously inspired the acclaimed 1979 film starring Judy Davis and Sam Neill. Netflix’s version expands the story across six episodes, giving more time to Sybylla’s family relationships, romantic struggles and determination to choose her own career.
My Brilliant Career premieres August 13, 2026, exclusively on Netflix.
