Apple Acquires PlasmaSolve to Support Future Product Designs

Apple has agreed to acquire PlasmaSolve, a company that develops plasma simulation software for advanced manufacturing processes, and the deal could support Apple as it prepares new product designs, materials, coatings, and form factors across its hardware lineup.

An EU regulatory filing confirms that Apple will acquire all issued shares in PlasmaSolve through a subsidiary, while also offering employment to selected employees from the company.

PlasmaSolve develops software that helps manufacturers design and improve plasma-based production methods, including processes used to apply thin coatings to complex three-dimensional objects.

The company says it combines physics simulation, chemistry simulation, machine learning, data analysis, and material testing to create digital models of manufacturing processes.

How PlasmaSolve could help Apple

PlasmaSolve introduced MatSight in 2023 as a specialised platform for simulating plasma-based manufacturing, which allows companies to test how coatings and other treatments will behave before using them in large-scale production.

For Apple, this software could help engineers apply ultra-thin coatings evenly across devices with curved frames, buttons, camera sections, hinges, and other difficult surfaces.

The acquisition also arrives as Apple reportedly prepares several major hardware changes, including a foldable iPhone, a redesigned anniversary iPhone, and possible updates to the Apple Watch and MacBook lineups.

Apple has not explained how it plans to use PlasmaSolve, although the company’s technology fits closely with Apple’s focus on thinner products, new materials, stronger finishes, and more complex industrial designs.

The PlasmaSolve acquisition could therefore give Apple better tools for testing manufacturing ideas while reducing production risks before new devices enter mass production.
