Netflix’s The Last House leaves its biggest answers until the final minutes, when the Delgado family finally learns what has kept them trapped inside their home for more than five years and why the mysterious creatures suddenly decide to release them.

What happens in The Last House?
Major spoilers for The Last House follow.
Ann, Jason and their children Graham and Ruth prepare to leave their suburban home one morning, only to discover that every door and window has been sealed. Similar barriers surround other houses in the neighborhood, while strange figures move through the endless rain outside.
The family eventually spends more than five years trapped inside. Jason turns an opening in the chimney into a way to catch animals and collect resources, while Ann grows food inside the house. Their home slowly changes into a survival system built from whatever materials remain.
Things become much worse when water enters the house and the creatures finally come close enough for the Delgados to understand what they are dealing with.
The Last House ending explained
The creatures are not aliens arriving from another planet. They are ancient ocean-dwelling beings that existed on Earth long before humans.
Director Louis Leterrier explains that humanity’s pollution, consumption and rising ocean temperatures drove them from the depths. From their perspective, humans have taken over their planet and damaged the environment they share.
That changes the meaning of the entire movie. The creatures have been controlling humanity rather than simply hunting people.
Jason initially responds by fighting back and trying to protect his family through force. Ruth sees something different. She believes the creature inside their home is attempting to communicate.
During the climax, Jason finally listens to her and stops attacking it.
That decision saves the family.
The creatures recognize that the Delgados are capable of changing their behavior. Jason chooses trust instead of violence, showing that the family understands the message behind their imprisonment. The creatures then open the doors and allow them to leave.
Does the Delgado family survive?
Yes. Ann, Jason, Graham and Ruth survive and leave the destroyed house behind.
They eventually escape across the flooded landscape by boat, searching for somewhere safe and hoping they are not the only people left alive.
The movie confirms that other survivors probably exist, although it deliberately avoids revealing how much of humanity remains.
Who says “Hello” at the end?
The final scene gives the movie one last mystery.
Ruth uses a radio and asks whether any survivors are listening. After a moment of static, an unidentified person answers with a simple “Hello?”
Leterrier has confirmed that the voice belongs to someone he describes as a highly recognizable figure, but he has intentionally kept the person’s identity secret.
The response also confirms something more important for the story: the Delgados are not alone.
Their five-year imprisonment is finally over, and the closing radio message leaves them heading toward an uncertain new world where other survivors are still waiting to be found.
